SPECIFICATIONS OF RAW MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS

The purpose of this action is to characterize the source residue so that plant can process as much PVC/PE diversity as possible and thus increase the recycling rate of multilayer packages.

  • In-depth study of the raw material at the European level so as to collect data concerning: geographical origins, manufacturers, packaging companies, uses/ applications, logistics, methods of collection and pre-treatment technology, quantities produced / reused / consumed / recovered / treated, final destination, etc.
  • Analysis on the applications of recycled products in different sectors: agro-food (packaging, irrigation products, agricultural films, accessories, etc.), packaging manufacturing, automotive, etc. Data will be collected at the European level, by taking into account the distribution areas of PVC / PE packages and involving the European and national associations of plastic producers and recyclers.

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A DEMONSTRATION PILOT LINE

The design and settling of a pilot line for treatment of PVC/PE multilayer waste is considered to be the backbone of the project. This demonstration line on the pre-industrial scale will be installed in Austria, in the packages’ separation plant of the partner SULAYR GT.

This location has been strategically decided due to its central position in Europe and proximity to the main areas of production and consumption.

This will be a fully operational line acting as demonstrator for the industries involved and other relevant stakeholders

OPTIMIZATION OF THE PROCESS ACCORDING TO THE SPECIFICATIONS

The purpose of this action is to characterize the delaminating process of multilayer waste so as to depending on the waste variability achieve the highest recycling rate on the basis of the source PVC/PE properties and the expected features of the final product.   This will allow reusing as much PVC/PE waste as possible and to obtain a product meeting the needs of packaging and producing companies, thus fostering revalorization of recovered PVC/PE.

INCORPORATION OF THE RPLAST TO PACKAGES AND OTHER APPLICATIONS (VALORISATION)

Once the plant is in operation, the viability of the technology shall be assessed by means of laboratory tests allowing offering products to manufacturers. In a demonstrating project as ours, the final agents involved in the packaging waste and recycling lifecycle must be given the chance to check the products obtained fulfill their expectations.

This task includes the analysis of the products obtained through the delaminating and grinding process that will help the optimization (Activity 3) so as to adjust the process and quality of the product to the different specifications set up by the potential clients.

REPLICABILITY AND TRANSFERABILITY STRATEGY

The purpose is to plan a set of actions aimed at guaranteeing the replicability and transferability of the knowledge generated in other countries and its application to other possible combinations of multilayer plastic, during and after the project implementation. This strategy shall be based on the technical and economic validation of the delaminating technology validated in the demo line of Austria.

Some of the actions planned within this Strategy are:

  • Technical and economic feasibility studies in the target countries.
  • Comparative analysis of raw materials’ quality.
  • Synergies with stakeholders.
  • Analysis about the location of the new replicated lines.
  • Business model diversification according to the waste origin so as to foster complete cycles of treatment.
  • Funding search: funding avalaibility analysis for the implementation of new plant in the selected locations.

MONITORING THE IMPACT OF THE PROJECT ACTIONS

The purpose of this action is to identify the main indicators for monitoring the impact of the project from the technical and environmental point of view. Besides proving the technical viability of the PVE/PE delaminating process, the project also aims to promote the establishment of agreements for waste collection and treatment by complex layer manufacturers and packaging companies leading to improvement of their quality procedures and increase of the product cycle sustainability. These actions shall monitor the reduction of the environmental impact in the packaging sector and the greenhouse emissions caused by the end of packages’ shelf life.

MONITORING THE SOCIOECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE PROJECT

The purpose of this action is to monitor the socioeconomic impact of the solution developed within the interest groups. It is important that the production line is properly scaled up to industrial level in order to assess the real costs linked to the implementation of the technology in real industrial conditions. Such analysis shall not only consider the plant capacity but also all auxiliary services and the maintenance and operational costs. In order to achieve these objectives, the demonstration line will be previously scaled up to industrial level so as to establish the real cost of the technology at the industrial level, either it is an independent plant or a secondary line of a recycling plant.

NETWORKING ACTIVITIES

It is envisaged creating a working network with other entities and agent involved in projects dealing with similar issues such as plastic waste recycling, manufacturing og food packages, production of biofuels, or policies regarding waste management, sustainable production and environmental protection.

The aim of this network is to establish a continuous flow of information, exchange of experiences and expectations and generation of enriching dialogue for all the stakeholders involved so to go further in sustainable production and environmental protection.

DISSEMINATION AND COMMUNICATION PLAN

This Plan will set up in a structured way the communication actions and tools to be developed in order to raise interest and awareness within the public opinion, policy makers and other groups about the project’s objectives, the underlying problems and the expected results by employing both traditional means (visits, brochures, articles, press releases, etc.) and new technologies (image, website, forums, newsletters, etc.) serving as support for the other actions (works, seminars and training actions, participation processes, etc.).
